T.A.Y. blocks /2016
The Tadao Ando Y blocks (T.A.Y. blocks) was an industrial design project based on the Japanese architect Tadao Ando’s work. The intent of the project was to create a desk object that referenced the work of a renowned architect. I tried to reflect his minimalist approach to architecture on this object. Specifically, I was inspired by the ‘Y’ columns he used in the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and the art of Japanese woodworking. I designed modular wooden Y’s that connect to each other to create different forms.

I designed two versions of this project. The first version of the Y's fit into each other to connect (top). The second version uses magnets to join (bottom).

The art of Japanese wood joinery, where pieces of wood join simply by their shape, with no need for glue, nails, or metal, inspired the first version of this product. (Image from RethinkTokyo)

I also designed the packaging for this product. For the first version I created a box out of layers of black, white and clear acrylic.

The packaging for the magnetic Y's was based on the design of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.
